DVBViewer Video Editor

The article is a brief overview of the basic functions of the video editor. It therefore needs a further revision and, above all, an addition, to which all experienced users are cordially invited. It is a translation of the german article in the Wiki. For the pictures you can look there (http://de.dvbviewer.tv/wiki/Video_Editor)

Function

The video editor is primarily used to cut TS recordings that have been created with the DVBViewer. The cutting result can also be saved in a different format, in particular as an MPG file. The FFMpeg video editor is used for this. The video editor can also recognize and cut out advertisements more or less well with the help of Comskip.

Usage

A recording is loaded via "File - Open Video" or via "File - Open Database". With File a Windows file selection window opens and with Database the selection is made on the basis of the DVBViewer recording database.

If the loading takes a long time, this may be due to the indexing, which can be displayed under "Tools - Environment Options". This makes the cut less precise, but if you only want to cut out the leading and trailing or advertising and can live with a few seconds of trailer or similar, you can do without indexing.

Cutting

The cut is made by marking the scenes to be included in the cut file. This is done on the user interface of the video editor

For the cut, the intersection points are marked with the position indicator. With the "jump buttons" you can jump forwards or backwards by 10 seconds. What the buttons do is displayed when you briefly position the mouse pointer over the button. The scale of the timeline can be changed or reset by right-clicking on it. The marked area is retained during the cut. The unmarked one is shown darkened in the overview.

When the areas to be cut are marked, click on "Save" at the bottom of the window. By default, the name of the source file is extended by "_Cut". If the cutting result should also be converted, select the desired format from the selection field.

Transcoding issues

If the cut is made very quickly and the cutting result has a length of zero, the reason may be that FFMpeg cannot do anything with the preset parameters. Then you can specify other options under "Tools - Environment Options - Transcoder".

The operation of FFMpeg is unfortunately very complicated for newbies and there are hardly any instructions to be found on the Internet.

For MPG, however, you can try these parameters, which have proven to work:

    -f dvd -target pal-dvd or
    -f dvd -target pal-dvd -r 25 -s 720x576 -qscale 0 or
    -f dvd -target pal-dvd -vb 8000k -mbd rd -trellis 1 -flags + mv0 -cmp 0 -subcmp 2

(Clarification: "*" and "or" are not part of the parameters!)
